Will this be the hottest Carnival ever? OPINION - BRAZIL

Will this be the hottest Carnival ever?

I'm from Bahia, but I confess: I've never been a big fan of Carnival. While many people experience this as the best time of the year, I've always been more reserved, and this party has never exactly been my thing. But even for those who don't like it so much, there's no ignoring it: Carnival is part of our culture, it moves the streets, the cities, the economy - and the heat.

Summer in Brazil is traditionally hot, but this year, extreme temperatures have become an even more present and alarming reality. In Rio de Janeiro, the city reached Heat Level 4 for the first time, a stage where temperatures reach between 40°C and 44°C. At times, the thermometers marked an impressive 40.4°C.

The heat is expected to continue, with few signs of cooling in sight. This scenario leads us to reflect on the intensity and frequency of these high temperatures. And the question arises: Are we living through the hottest Carnival ever?

According to the Rio Alert System, the month of February is already well below the historical average for rainfall, with just 5 mm until February 16. The forecast is that February 2025 will be one of the driest months in history, which increases the likelihood of us reaching a record temperature for the month, which is currently 41.8°C, recorded in February 2023.

As if that weren't enough, Carnival is coming, and with it, the need to rethink our relationship with the climate and sustainability. Although there is the possibility of isolated rain showers during the event, forecasts for Carnival indicate that extreme heat is likely to remain.

Extreme heat isn't just uncomfortable - it's a serious risk, especially for the elderly, children, and vulnerable groups. Heatstroke, dehydration, and excessive tiredness are real dangers. If you're going to be out on the streets, beaches, or blocos, stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and seek shade whenever you can.

And while we're enjoying ourselves - or not - how about looking beyond the blocos? This heatwave is just another reminder of the climate crisis. It's not just about discomfort. It's about health and quality of life.

So let it be a Carnival of joy, encounter, and celebration - for those who like it. But let it also be a conscious Carnival. Because the future is hot. And it depends on what we do now.

With gratitude, 🌿🌍
