Greenpeace France abandons X over climate 'skepticism'
Paris, Nov 22, 2024 (AFP) - The French branch of Greenpeace said Friday it had abandoned X, owned by Elon Musk, because it “favors disinformation and climate skepticism.”
The decision follows similar moves by news outlets in recent days, including.
Britain's The Guardian branded X a “toxic media platform” and accused Musk of using his “influence to shape political discourse.”
Greenpeace France said: “X today reaches an unprecedented level of toxicity: absence of moderation, the proliferation of hate speech and climate skeptics, and algorithmic pushing of extremist content.”
Jean-Francois Julliard, general director of Greenpeace France, said that the organization “cannot feed a platform that favors disinformation (and) climate skepticism.”
Greenpeace France said it would remain active on other platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Threads, while exploring alternatives such as Bluesky.
Since its acquisition in 2022 by Musk, X has been accused of spreading false information and insufficient moderation.
US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Musk, who rejects censorship in the name of free speech, to head a ministry of government efficiency.
