PLANAVEG 2025: Towards Brazil's environmental recovery and climate goals
The National Native Vegetation Recovery Plan (PLANAVEG) is one of Brazil's main initiatives to combat climate change and preserve biodiversity. To recover 12 million hectares by 2030, the plan aims to restore degraded ecosystems, improve environmental governance, and strengthen partnerships with the private sector and NGOs.
The Forest Code Observatory points out that the new PLANAVEG has brought significant advances with improvements in governance, new financial instruments, and innovative monitoring systems, facilitating the recovery of native vegetation.
By 2025, the plan focuses on increasing incentives for the recovery of areas on private properties, promoting the production of native seedlings, and creating economic mechanisms such as Payment for Environmental Services (PSA).
The private sector, especially the agricultural sector, has an important role to play in implementation and is encouraged to adopt sustainable practices. NGOs are also essential for implementing the projects, as well as involving local communities.
Among the expected benefits are the recovery of springs, an increase in biodiversity, the generation of green jobs, and the strengthening of the local economy. However, challenges such as the lack of funding and the resistance of some sectors to the plan need to be overcome.
In addition to the environmental gains, PLANAVEG strengthens the rural economy with a focus on valuing small properties and traditional communities. The restoration of native areas can add value to the market for sustainable products and create opportunities for the development of regional production chains, such as the cultivation of native species and the commercialization of environmental services.
Another key point is the use of innovative technologies to monitor and implement projects. Tools such as satellite images, artificial intelligence, and drones have been applied to map priority areas, monitor restoration progress, and ensure transparency in meeting targets.
Brazil's participation in COP30, which will take place in 2025 in Belém (PA), brings even more relevance to PLANAVEG. As host of the event, the country has the opportunity to demonstrate to the world the results of its restoration policies, consolidating its role as a protagonist in the global environmental agenda and reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.
PLANAVEG represents a crucial effort to align the conservation of native vegetation with economic development, promoting a fairer and more sustainable growth model. Recovering degraded areas strengthens biodiversity, improves quality of life, and positions Brazil as a benchmark in the fight against climate change.
