Petrobras CEO Magda Chambriard said on Wednesday that the company has met all the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) demands for oil exploration in the Equatorial Margin, in the Foz do Amazonas Basin. The statement was made during the Brazil Energy Forum, at the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Firjan), in downtown Rio de Janeiro.
“We are in a licensing process with Ibama. We delivered all of Ibama's demands in the last few days of November. We're building the fauna rehabilitation center in Oiapoque, which should be ready by March,” said the president of Petrobras.
“All the answers to the demands are in the report we delivered on November 27 and we are now waiting for Ibama's assessment of the material.”
The Foz do Amazonas Basin occupies a strip of maritime territory that stretches from the border between Amapá and French Guiana to where Marajó Bay divides the archipelago from the coast of Pará. The region is home to the FZA-M-59 oil and natural gas exploration block.
The block is part of the Equatorial Margin, which includes five sedimentary basins: Pará-Maranhão, Barreirinhas, Ceará, and Potiguar, as well as the mouth of the Amazon. Petrobras has 16 wells in the new exploratory frontier but only has authorization from Ibama to drill two of them off the coast of Rio Grande do Norte.
The exploration is criticized by environmentalists, who are concerned about possible environmental damage. Ibama has denied licenses for other areas, such as the Foz do Amazonas Basin. Petrobras has asked the institute, which is linked to the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA), to reconsider.
